2025年8月29日、ICSTI2025の会議後イベントとして、非常に密度の高い一日を過ごしました。
今回が初めての北京訪問であったこともあり、私は工場見学をあえて見送り、代わりに 北京科技大学（USTB） を訪問しました。
この訪問は、李克江 先生に直接連絡し、ご厚意で実現したものです。
ちょうど同じ時期にUSTBを訪れていた研究者が集まり、自然発生的に小規模ワークショップが開催されました。

各研究グループが進める脱炭素製鉄研究の最新動向を共有し、将来の共同研究について非常に率直で実りある議論が行われました。
加えて、USTBが誇る高炉・製銑関連の実験・分析設備のラボツアーも行われ、研究環境のスケールと完成度に大きな刺激を受けました。
この機会をアレンジしてくださった 李先生に深く感謝するとともに、
包括的な高炉モデルを分かりやすく解説してくださった 焦璐璐 先生、
そして専攻長として迎えてくださった 張建良 先生にも心より御礼申し上げます。
午後には、USTB博士課程学生の Yushan Bu さんが個人的にアテンドしてくださり、
Zulhan 先生、Giulio de Medeiros 氏（Universidade Federal Fluminense 博士課程）とともに、紫禁城など北京の名所を巡りました。
Bu さんには、学会前後の交通手配やホテル予約までサポートしていただき、感謝の言葉しかありません。
この一日は改めて、
研究は会議室の中だけで完結するものではなく、人との出会いと対話の中で広がっていく
ということを強く実感させてくれました。
材料工学・冶金工学に興味のある学生の皆さんへ。
国際会議の“その先”にこそ、次の研究テーマや仲間との出会いが待っています。
Learning Beyond the Conference
— A Post-ICSTI2025 Visit to the University of Science and Technology Beijing
On August 29, 2025, following ICSTI2025, I spent an exceptionally rewarding day in Beijing.
As this was my first visit to the city, I decided to skip the industrial plant tour and instead visit the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), thanks to the kind arrangement of Kejiang Li.
By fortunate timing, several researchers were visiting USTB on the same day, which led to an informal mini-workshop.
Participants included colleagues from the University of Newcastle group led by Tom Honeyands,
Prof. Zulfiadi Zulhan from Institut Teknologi Bandung, and
Mr. Devendra Nama, a PhD student from Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.
We exchanged the latest insights on decarbonized ironmaking, discussed future collaborative possibilities, and toured USTB’s impressive experimental and analytical facilities related to blast furnace research.
I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Li, as well as to Lulu Jiao for her clear explanation of integrated blast furnace modeling, and to Jianliang Zhang for hosting us.
In the afternoon, Ms. Yushan Bu, a PhD student at USTB, kindly guided us around Beijing—including a visit to the Forbidden City—together with Prof. Zulhan and Mr. Giulio de Medeiros from Universidade Federal Fluminense.
This experience reinforced a simple lesson:
some of the most valuable learning happens outside formal conference sessions—through people, places, and shared curiosity.
