8月21日、大学院入試の終了を祝うと同時に、

Montanuniversität Leoben から特別研究学生として来日した Lukas Donau さんの歓迎会を行いました。

Lukas さんは Johannes Schenk 先生の研究グループに所属し、

Jan Eisbecher Lubensky 博士の指導のもと、

オーストリアを代表する鉄鉱石鉱床 Erzberg を活用した

グリーンスチール製造の可能性を研究しています。

Erzberg が位置する町の名前が **Eisenerz（ドイツ語で「鉄鉱石」）**であることも、

冶金に関わる者にとっては象徴的で、

「素材・土地・産業・研究」が強く結びついていることを実感させてくれます。

Lukas さんは 11月末まで福岡に滞在し、

siderite を含む Erzberg 精鉱の水素還元をテーマに研究を進めます。

siderite は還元前に 脱炭酸（decarbonation） が必要であり、

本研究では複数の反応ステップの相互作用を整理することで、

持続可能な製鉄プロセスへの示唆を得ることを目指します。

九州大学では、こうした 海外大学との共同研究が日常の中にあります。

材料工学・冶金工学に興味のある学生の皆さんにとって、

世界とつながりながら研究できる環境は、大きな財産になるはずです。

Lukas さんとの共同研究を通じて、

九州大学 × Montanuniversität Leoben の連携がさらに深まり、

脱炭素製鉄研究の発展につながることを期待しています。

Welcoming a Visiting Research Student from Montanuniversität Leoben to Kyushu University

On August 21, following the completion of the graduate school entrance examinations,

we held a welcome gathering for Mr. Lukas Donau, who has joined Kyushu University as a special research student from Montanuniversität Leoben.

Lukas is a member of the research group led by Johannes Schenk,

and is directly supervised by Jan Eisbecher Lubensky.

His research focuses on the potential of green steel production using Erzberg iron ores, one of Austria’s most important iron ore deposits.

An intriguing aspect of this work is that the town hosting Erzberg is called Eisenerz, literally meaning “iron ore” in German—

a symbolic reminder of how geology, industry, and metallurgical research are deeply intertwined.

Lukas will stay in Fukuoka until the end of November, working on hydrogen reduction of Erzberg concentrates containing siderite.

Because siderite requires decarbonation prior to hydrogen reduction, his study aims to clarify the interaction between multiple reaction steps and to extract insights relevant to sustainable ironmaking.

At Kyushu University, international collaboration is part of everyday research life.

For students interested in materials science and metallurgy, this environment offers the opportunity to conduct research while being closely connected to the global scientific community.
