2025年8月6日〜7日、韓国・浦項にある POSCO および POSTECH を訪問する貴重な機会を得ました。

浦項を訪れるのは2011年以来で、私にとっては、2009年に初めて韓国を訪れた際の最初の訪問先がPOSCO浦項製鉄所であったこともあり、特別な思い入れのある場所です。

今回の訪問は、POSCOの Sohn 博士 にホストいただきました。心より感謝申し上げます。

同行したのは、初めて韓国を訪れた 昆 竜矢 助教 と、将来博士課程進学を希望している修士1年の 岩橋 諒 君 です。二人にとって、本訪問が国際的な研究の世界に踏み出す良いきっかけになったことを願っています。

8月6日はPOSCOを訪問し、POSCOミュージアムでの温かい歓迎の後、日本のカーボンニュートラル製鉄に関する国家プロジェクトや、九州大学・大野研究室の研究活動について、約2時間のセミナーを行いました。その後、研究施設を見学し、2009年当時の記憶と現在の技術進展を重ね合わせる貴重な時間となりました。

8月7日には、POSTECH 鉄鋼先端技術大学院（GIFT）を Jung 先生 にホストいただきました。研究内容の情報交換と研究室見学に加え、POSCOおよび韓国の国家プロジェクトに支えられた HyREX 関連の大規模試験設備について、Rocha 博士、Kim 氏 から詳しい説明を受け、非常に刺激的な議論ができました。

また本訪問では、POSCOの Cha 博士（東北大学・日野研究室時代の旧友）や、今年6月にレオベンでお世話になった Schenk 先生（Montanuniversität Leoben）との再会にも恵まれました。

今回の訪問を通じて、製鉄・冶金分野では、研究室の外にこそ学びの現場があり、国境を越えたネットワークが研究を前に進めることを改めて実感しました。

材料工学・冶金工学に興味を持つ学生の皆さんには、こうした国際的な研究交流が日常となる環境で、ぜひ次の時代を担ってほしいと思います。

Exploring Global Ironmaking Research

— Visit to POSCO and POSTECH, Pohang, Korea (August 6–7, 2025)

On August 6–7, 2025, I had the privilege of visiting POSCO and POSTECH in Pohang, Korea.

This visit was particularly meaningful to me, as Pohang was the destination of my very first trip to Korea in 2009, and my last visit dates back to 2011.

The visit was kindly hosted by Dr. Sohn of POSCO, to whom I am deeply grateful.

I was accompanied by Tatsuya Kon, for whom this was a first visit to Korea, and Mr. Ryo Iwahashi, a first-year master’s student aspiring to pursue doctoral studies. I hope this experience will encourage them to further expand their international research networks.

On August 6, we visited POSCO, where I gave a two-hour seminar introducing Japan’s national projects on carbon-neutral ironmaking as well as the research activities of Kyushu University and the Ohno Laboratory. A tour of the research facilities followed, offering valuable perspective on both past and present developments.

On August 7, we visited POSTECH’s Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT), hosted by Prof. Jung. We exchanged information on current research activities and toured laboratories, including large-scale experimental facilities related to HyREX, supported by POSCO and national projects. Detailed explanations by Dr. Rocha and Mr. Kim led to highly fruitful discussions.

The visit also provided opportunities to reconnect with colleagues, including Dr. Cha of POSCO and Prof. Schenk of Montanuniversität Leoben.

This visit once again highlighted that progress in ironmaking and metallurgy is driven by strong international ties, shared facilities, and personal connections across borders.

For students interested in materials and metallurgical engineering, such global engagement is not an exception—but an integral part of everyday research life.
